How much is the 2008-2009 budget and what percentage of the budget is spent directly on student instruction? How much is spent on administrative/operational costs and what is this percentage?

A: The district budget is currently around $154 million. 79% of the budget goes to what we call “Program” costs (direct instruction), 8% goes to Administrative Costs which includes all administrators and support personnel, and other positions (for example, chief of security, parent liaison, communications specialist) and 13 % is for operating costs of the district.

Obviously with the current proposed level of funding cuts the governor has proposed, the district will be making severe cuts in personnel both through attrition and layoffs.

Yes, but in the portion of the budget that is directly for salaries, what percentage of that portion is for Administrative costs?

What percentage of the budget includes the superintendent's office being equipped with new furniture and carpeting?
This purchase reminds me of our governor spending taxpayers money on new carpets for the governors mansion!
As school tax payers and New York State taxpayers why should we pay for these items when people are going to be laid off?

A: The money used to replace the old carpet and furniture had been aside for such in the district’s budget. State contracts allow us to get the lowest prices so the entire cost was about $6000 out of a district budget of $154 million. This amounts to about four thousandths of one percent of the total budget for this year. It is not an expense that carries over into the future year budget therefore, it does not affect personnel in 2009-2010.

PostSubject: $6000   Wed 28 Jan 2009, 12:50 pm

A college visit for Global Commerce to ensure that each house had the chance to do at least one visit this year woudl cost about $600, approximately 1/10 of the cost of the carpeting. How can the Global Commerce student's educational experiences be valued less than carpeting?

Why are the physical environments for the houses so different? When will some of the house principals get a decent work environment?

PostSubject: cut pricey teachers   Wed 28 Jan 2009, 1:28 pm

save money by encouraging some of the long term teachers- like those few over 35 years and over $95,000 a year to retire- 2 teachers for one. Maybe then the schools can get updated globes[ mentioned in other emails] pencils, paper-- things needed

I am not sure how many years experience my kids teachers have, but since they are all great I woudl hate to see any of the experienced teachers retire. They make a difference for students everyday.
