Has the district considered going back to neighborhood schools and eliminating some of the huge cost of our buses?

A: The district includes mostly neighborhood schools with three city-wide magnet schools. The magnet schools are part of a voluntary desegregation plan with funds from the federal and state governments. At this time, there has been no discussion to eliminate the magnet school option and go to purely neighborhood schools.

What about making students go to the school in their attendance zones when thay've moved. Wouldn't that cut out on gas usage, buses, and overall savings in the school budget? A lot of the families in Schenectady move quite frequently and a lot of the time well out of the attendance zone of their address and still are allowed to stay in the same school requiring busing.

A: We have a board policy called the “Mobility Policy” that addresses this particular concern. The policy is designed to ensure that students have stability and consistency regarding their education despite the location of their residence within the district. In light of the upcoming budget discussions, it certainly may be an area that we discuss. However, the educational benefit and the fact that most of these situations do not affect the overall busing costs of the district, will be factored in as well.
